Ashland UCC Downstairs Church
We nurture and educate our children to love God,
love the planet, and love each other,
while building friendships and having fun.
By exploring the life and the teachings of Jesus, we model and affirm:
creativity, curiosity, courage, and coolness.
We are called to our ministry on behalf of our children, youth, families, future generations, our hometown, and the world. (Snacks help!)
Infants, Toddlers, and PreK: Chiu-mei Shih (Sabrina), Kaylan Wilson, and high school helpers are available to care for your children during both Sunday services following the candle lighting.
9am Worship Service: We begin with music followed by a welcome and announcements. During our first congregational song, children are invited forward to light candles and share a prayer. Older children may return to sit with their families and make use of the “prayground area” located in the front of the sanctuary during the service if they like.
10:30am Worship Service: This service begins the same. After candle lighting, children may proceed to “downstairs church.” Parents/Caregivers are welcome to accompany them until they all feel comfortable, or keep them with them in the service.
Kindergarten through Fifth Grade: Kaylan Wilson leads “downstairs church” where children engage with the Bible texts through age-appropriate activities.
Middle/High School: Youth are welcome to stay in the service. On the third Sunday of the month they are invited out to coffee with Rev. Paula Sohl and a special guest. They are also invited to participate in the monthly Ashland Youth Collective* gatherings on Sunday evenings at 5pm. Some 8th-12th graders assist as helpers in our children’s program. The OWL** sexuality curriculum is offered this year on Monday nights from 6:15-8pm for 6-9th graders and for 10-12th graders when there is a cohort.
Cross-Gen Services: On the first Sunday of the month, we offer Cross-Gen/All-Age worship at both 9am and 10:30am. (Nursery is always still available downstairs for infants and toddlers and pre-K kiddos who need it.) These services are specifically planned to engage all generations, often using participatory and multi-sensory elements of worship.
Family Faith Explore Outings are offered on an ongoing basis.
The Children and Youth Ministry Team meets for planning the 3rd Sunday of the month at noon and all parents, grandparents, and others are welcome to participate.
*The Ashland Youth Collective is a progressive, ecumenical community youth group for middle school and high school youth in and around Ashland, Oregon. Ashland First Congregational United Church of Christ, First United Methodist Church, and Trinity Episcopal have come together to form a community youth group. We believe we can do more and be more together. http://ashlandyouthcollective.tumblr.com/about
